During the month of January 2018, MIIA AUTIO has been the artist-in-residence at Handshake 302. On January 19, 2018 she introduced her previous work to us. This Monday, January 29, 2018, Miia will give us a glimpse into her Baishizhou.
Artist statement: The camera is commonly seen as a machine that can reproduce the present and retain it. Photography has a long tradition of saving vanishing views of different cultures and landscapes. Thanks to those photographs we can have a glimpse to the past and imagine it – but in fact photography cannot reproduce reality. Instead photographs reproduce the always limited view of their maker. What’s more, the subjective nature of photographs mean that they have an even bigger impact on the way we imagine past than they might if they were truly objective.
During the weeks of flânerie through the streets of Baishizhou, I have been collecting visual details that attracted my subjective gaze. The result is a picture of one certain place that once existed and certain moments that once happened. At the same time, the abstract nature of these images mean that they look like they could have been taken somewhere else. That is my way of communicating the lose of one place – not my photographs or anyone else’s photographs could restore it.
If you are interested in learning about Miia’s work and her project in Baishizhou, please join us Monday evening at Banxian Cafe. The talk begins at 7:30 p.m. and will be held in English.
